What Is Twitter
Twitter is a message service that allows you to send and receive short messages
(known as tweets) within your Twitter community which consists of people you
follow and people who follow you.
Your Twitter community consists of:
People You Follow.
You define what your Community is by the people you follow. You see the tweets
created by everyone you follow. By following someone you subscribe to their tweets.
People Who Follow You.
Other people read your tweets Via your Profile and decide to follow you. Your
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
followers see the tweets you send out.
What Are Tweets?
Tweets are short, only 140 characters long, so they are easy to skim.
The Twitter website says you tweet to answer the question "What are you doing?"
This has led to a common misconception about Twitter.
People who don't know twitter that it is all about Think it's people saying things
like.... “Hey I'm watching TV” Or “Woohooo just bought some cheerios”
It's not!!
If you thought that don't beat yourself up about it, so did I at one point.
It would be pretty boring to read what people have for lunch or about their commute
in traffic. Fortunately, most tweets are not about those things. Instead, you learn the
major events and the small details about the business and personal lives of the people
you follow. You also get details of what other people are working on and marketing.
This last bit is what interests us.
So To Summarise...
Twitter is a completely new form of communication I read the following description
a while back and I've not seen a better one since...
“ Until you use it, you can’t quite get your head around it. After you use it, there isn’t
an easy way to explain it to others. Everyone must make the same journey to
understand it.”
Imagine walking around the car park before a ballgame and listening in to what
people are saying ..that's what's twitter is like, you might hear someone trying to sell
T-shirts, or someone talking about the upcoming game or someone giving someone
directions or a recipe for the barbecue sauce they are using.
Tweets are just like snatches of conversation all done in 140 characters or less.
People tweet about all sorts of things, what they are thinking, tips, about their blog
posts , about TV about life in general.,Funny things that have happened, news, work

events, inspiring thoughts.
You name it they Tweet it!
Look at the graphic above it gives a great snapshot of different types of tweets..
You've got blog post notifications , Notifications about Latest articles being posted,
both of which are done on autopilot.

You got news and Information and a quotation. So lets move on ...
What is Your Goal???
Before you start to use twitter you need to decide your Goal.
As you are reading this ebook I am going to assume that you want to use Twitter to
create an income and to promote products. Know what your goal is is all important as
it helps to focus you and define how you use twitter on a daily basis. Keep your goal
in mind at all times and develop it and revise it on a regular basis.
Now you know what you want from twitter it's time to go get it...
How To Use Twitter
(This section is aimed at people who have not set up an account yet .If you have set up your account
and set up your profile please feel free to skip it)
*This is a basic set up In the next section we'll look at how to take it to the next level.
To learn about Twitter, you have to use Twitter. If you haven’t set up your Twitter
account, do it now at: http://twitter.com/.
Your Twitter profile explains who you are to the world. Each component is optional,
but your profile allows other users to find you and learn about you.
Your name is your real name, not your Twitter user name. Use your real name if you
want people to find you using the Twitter search feature.
Your location is where you are living..Duh! . Most people put a city name and a twoletter
state abbreviation, or a town and Country and but there are no rules.
Your profile lets you link to one webpage. You can link to your website, your blog,
or you can develop a special Twitter landing page that tells people more about you
and how you use Twitter.
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
Your bio gives you 160 characters to give people a hint about what you are all about.
You create these items when you open your Twitter account. You can edit them any
time under the Settings option. Others view your Twitter profile when they click on
your Twitter username in a tweet, or when they visit your home page
http://twitter.com/yourusername).
Your Twitter Profile
Before going any further, use this checklist to make sure you have your account set
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
up to get a good start.
Your Username should be used to brand you by your name if you are well know in
your niche or by Keywords associated with your niche. i.e Weight_loss_expert, Acne
_cures
Try to keep the username as short as possible but don't be afraid of using keywords.
Make sure Your link points to your blog, website, Twitter landing page, or another
online resource
Use your 1 line bio to attract followers.
Use your location, you might find people you can network with. I've found several
local businesses whom I might be able to do some business with.
Upload a photograph
Do not protected updates.
These items give you a basic Twitter account setup. Later, you can refine your
account settings to support your Twitter goals. Don’t worry about these decisions.
You can change them later.
Account Checklist
When you decide to follow someone, you subscribe to that person’s tweets. The
people you follow determine what you read on Twitter.
Below is an Overview of how to use Twitter for internet marketing I'll be covering
the important aspects in more depth in part two.
Whom Should I Follow?
In general, you might follow:
Friends and family
People in your local community that you see at professional and personal events
Customers (and potential customers)
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
Peers and people in your industry
Service providers for your business
People who inspire you personally or professionally
Social media gurus
As you start out, be open to meeting new people on Twitter. As you begin to see the
power and potential for Twitter in your business, you can adjust your goals and
change whom you follow.
People In Your Niche <====== This is the important one for Internet Marketers
Finding People To Follow
There are several ways you can find people to follow on Twitter.
Name Search. Use the Find People search feature to locate people by name or
Twitter username.
Email Search. Let Twitter go through your email contacts to find people you already
know on Twitter.
Keyword Search. Use the search feature to find people who include specific
keywords in their tweets. http://search.twitter.com/
http://www.twellow.com/ The Twitter yellow pages find people in your niche who
have added their details....Don't forget to add your details while you are there.
#FollowFriday. Look for #FollowFriday recommendations from people you already
follow
And Most importantly......Piggyback. Find people in your niche. See whom they
follow and follow them.
In Part 2 we'll look at this more closely.
Twitter Timeline
Your Twitter timeline is the list of tweets that you see because of the people you
follow. Your timeline shows up on your Twitter home page (http://twitter.com/home).
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
Twitter doesn’t automatically update your timeline each time someone tweets. You
must manually update your timeline every few minutes.
Whom You Follow Matters
The quality of your Twitter experience depends on whom you follow. Your timeline
contains tweets from the people you follow. If you don’t like what you read, if you
are not inspired or engaged in conversation from your timeline, change the people
you follow!
Public Timeline
There is a public timeline that contains tweets from everyone on Twitter. You can
view this at http://twitter.com/public_timeline
Everyone makes their own decisions about whom to follow. When someone you
don’t know follows you, you have a choice to make. Do you want to follow back or
not?
Some people always follow back.
Some people selectively follow back.
Neither policy is right or wrong. It all depends on your Twitter goal.
Some people are selective about whom they follow back because they don’t have
time to read and talk with everyone who follows them.
Other people follow everyone back, and selectively read the tweets in their timeline.
Decide on your follow policy starting out. Be prepared to reassess your policy as you
gain Twitter experience and as your Twitter following grows.
Important Tip
Before we go any further It's a good idea to grab some free software. You
can use twitter to handle everything but I would suggest that you get
something like tweetdeck http://tweetdeck.com to manage your twitter
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
life.
Tweetdeck allows you to :
• Tweet directly from TweetDeck
• Stay up to date – view all new tweets in real-time
• Use columns to create your personal dashboard
• Create Groups to easily follow friends, colleagues or other interest
groups
• Update Facebook and follow your Facebook friends
• Follow topics in real-time with saved searches
• View @replies and direct messages and manage your conversations
• Never miss an important tweet with notifications
• Share your photos and videos with Twitpic and 12seconds
• And many more Twitter favourites including Stocktwits, Twitscoop
and all the most popular URL shortening services
Another alternative I've been using recently is called Destroy Twitter https://
destroytwitter.com/
Right Now back To Twitter.....
Your Twitter Community
Twitter divides your community into two basic groups:
People you follow
People who follow you
However, it is more helpful to talk about your Twitter community as three groups:
Your Twitter friends are the people you follow who follow you back. This is the
conversation zone for your personal community.
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
Your Twitter fans are people who follow you even though you don’t follow them.
Your Twitter inspiration are people you follow who don’t follow you back. As an
marketer you should keep this category to the minimum.
Your inspiration may be people, or they may be information services like weather or
news updates. You follow them because their tweets help you to meet your Twitter
goals.
There are three types of tweets you can send out.
General tweets. A public tweet sent to everyone who follows you.
@Replies. A public tweet sent to a specific person on Twitter. You may send an
@reply in response to a tweet sent out by a person. Or you can use the @reply to
send a message to anyone on Twitter.
Direct message. (DM) A private tweet sent to a person who follows you. You cannot
send a direct message to someone who does not follow you.
Start Tweeting!
What Do I Tweet?
Now, it is time to start sending tweets to your followers. It may take you a while to
figure out what you want to tweet about. That is normal. Take some time to read what
other people tweet while you figure out what you want to say.
Here are some suggestions for tweet ideas:
What you are doing (but don’t be boring).
Your current business challenge.
What you are reading with details so others can read along (if interested).
Announce a new blog post, press release, product release, promotion, etc.
Share an insight or humorous look at your current challenges or situation.
Ask a question. Your followers may have an opinion or offer you some insight based
on their own experiences.

Tweets With Links
If you are going to Tweet a link it is wise to shorten it first as links take up valuable
space. If you have installed tweetdeck you can shorten the url from with the
dashboard. Alternativly use tools like TinyUrl or BudUrl
TinyURL http://tinyurl.com/
Budurl http://budurl.com/
Retweets
Retweets are important avoid them at your peril!
When someone posts an interesting tweet, you may choose to retweet it. By
retweeting, you share the tweet with your followers. If you found the tweet
interesting, perhaps they will feel the same way.
To retweet, copy the tweet and paste it in the tweet box. Add “RT” (short for
“retweet”) at the beginning, and add “@” before the username. For example:
m_j_thompson I need a recommendation for a free FTP program..anyone know a
good free one?
Becomes: RT @M_J_thompson I need a recommendation for a free FTP
program..anyone know a good free one?
As people retweet, a tweet goes beyond one person’s community. A popular tweet
that many people retweet becomes viral, meaning that it spreads far beyond its source
and beyond the reach of the person who wrote it.
Request a Retweet
Occasionally, you may want others to retweet for you. You can ask people to retweet
by adding “please RT” or “please retweet” at the end of your tweet.
It is important that you leave enough free characters available so that people
can RT without going over the 140 character Limit
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
Reply to a Tweet
@Replies
You send an @reply (at reply) to a single person, but an @reply is not a private
message.
@Replies show up:
In your timeline.
In the recipient’s timeline (only if the recipient follows you).
In the recipient’s @Username mentions list.
In the public timeline.
In the timeline of every person who follows both you and @reply person.
If you read a tweet and want to reply, simply hover your mouse over the tweet until a
back arrow appears on the right. Click the back arrow and Twitter starts creating your
@reply. Twitter provides a link back to the original tweet so the @reply recipient can
link the reply to the tweet.
Direct Messages
(Using Tweetdeck or Destroy Twitter will make direct replying much easier..)
You can send a direct message to any user who follows you. You don't use the tweet
box on your home page to send a direct message. Instead, you send it from the Direct
Messages page when you are logged into your account. Click the Direct Messages
option (right menu).
Direct Messages web address: http://twitter.com/direct_messages
Three Ways To Send a Direct Message
Display the direct messages page. Use the drop-down list to select the person to
receive your direct message, and type the message in the box. .
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
You can send a direct message from a user’s tweet archive if that person follows you.
Click the user’s avatar or username to display the person’s tweet archive. Click
[Message Username] under Actions option (right menu). Twitter displays a special
direct message page where you type the message.
When someone sends you a direct message, you can reply to a direct message with a
direct message if that person follows you. Display your Direct Messages page, locate
the direct message from that person, hover your mouse over the direct message and
an envelope with a left arrow appears. Click on the envelope, and Twitter starts
creating your direct message to that person.
Twitiquette
No one wants to read your tweets if you only talk about yourself and promote your
business. Find a balance people don't mind you promoting things as long as you keep
things balanced and provide a good info a lot of the time. This is a bit of a change for
some Internet marketers!!
Your Community want to engage with you and not a faceless business. Get personal
and don't be afraid to talk about things that matter to you. Post Information and links
to interesting blog posts.
Be Honest!!
Treat people who you want to be treated
Conversation Tips
You may decide to follow most of the people who follow you. This follow policy
creates a large group of friends and gives you a large conversation zone.
As your number of friends grows, you may find it difficult to keep up with the tweets
in your timeline. Here are some ideas for managing a large conversation zone:
Skim your tweets. This is like walking through the room at a large party. You know
you are missing great conversations, but you just can’t talk to everyone all of the
time. Adjust your expectations so you can jump into any conversation that catches
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
your attention, and let the rest go.
Adjust your @reply setting. You can remove all @replies sent by the people you
follow. You only see @replies sent to you.
Focus on your direct messages and @replies list. This way, you catch the
conversation directed at you. The More, The Merrier
How To Maintain Your Community
There are several things you should do to maintain your community and fulfil your
Twitter goals. They are equally important, but they take different amounts of time.
Communicate ...Tweet
Sending and reading tweets is your biggest activity on Twitter. The whole purpose of
being on Twitter is to engage your community in conversation.
Community Management
In the beginning, it takes some time to define your Twitter community and figure out
your follow policy to meet your Twitter goal. But after you get those basics figured
out, you can do your community management in a few minutes once a week.
Reputation Management
Here is where you listen to what people throughout Twitter are saying about you and
your company, products, and brand. There are many ways to keep an eye on these
hidden conversations on Twitter.
I have a search running in tweetdeck which is (including the /) /@m_j_thompson
This then tracks any reference to me.
Tweet Anywhere
You don’t have to be sitting at your desk to use Twitter. You can send and receive
tweets using a variety of mobile devices. You can tweet from anywhere you want so
long as you have an internet enabled device or a cell phone.
I've often tweeted from my iPod touch whilst out and about.
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
All the following devices will allow you to Tweet from anywhere in the world.
A laptop computer
A netbook computer
Any cell phone with text messaging service.
Any web-enabled cell phone or smart phone.
Any portable wifi device (like the iPod Touch)
This flexibility makes it possible for you to take Twitter with you wherever you go.
Text Messaging
Depending on where you are in the world, Twitter provides a free text-messaging
service that converts your tweets to text messages, and your text messages to tweets.
To use this service, you must register your cell phone with Twitter (use the Devices
tab under Settings).
Twitter doesn’t charge for this service. However, you cell phone carrier may charge
you for each tweet. If you want to use Twitter this way, upgrade to an unlimited text
messaging service, or be prepared for a large cell phone bill.
Part 2
OK that's the basics done...In Part 2 we are going to look at how to use twitter to
become a successful Internet Marketer ...that's what you came here for isn't it??
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
Getting Followers
The Following guide will help you to get thousands of visitors in a few weeks. I have
been using this method to get over 150 visitors a day recently for several of my
accounts..it works and it's free!
To be a successful Internet Marketer on Twitter you need followers, and not just any
followers you need engaged followers. This means you need to do some work and
follow some rules.
Step1
Fill out your profile and add a Picture. I can't stress how important this is before you
do anything else set up your profile. Ideally you should change your background,
there are several places where you can get free backgrounds such as
http://mytweetspace.com or http://www.twitbacks.com/ you can also buy a
personalised background for around $40
I strongly encourage you to use a custom background, But even if you don't change
the standard background you MUST upload an image if you want to be successful.
In your profile go to settings and add a Picture, there is nothing worse than a twitter
account with the standard no image graphic, you won't get many followers and
people won't take you seriously.
One final thing to do in Step 1 is to make some tweets. People will often check your
tweets before they follow you, so you good interesting tweets in place before you go
looking for followers. I've found that 5 to 10 are usually enough to start picking up
followers.
Step 2.
The first thing to do is to is to find people in the same niche as you. During This
demo we'll assume that we are in the Weight Loss Niche. The first place we need to
go to is http://search.twitter.com
Twitter search allows you to search for topic that are being discussed in this case we
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
will search for Weight loss.
As we discussed previously you can also use Twellow or other similar services.
Which ever one you use the important thing is to focus on people who are already
active in your niche.
Right lets look at Twitter Search and how we can use it to find people in our niche.
Once there we type in weight loss in the search box. Twitter will then display all the
recent tweets with the keyword weight loss.
As you can see in the graphic below have been several relevant tweets in the last 10
minutes.
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
The next step is to find someone with a decent sized list. In the List above we are
going to choose “Fitness 101”
If we click on her name Fitness_101 we will be taken to her profile. We can then see
how many followers she has
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
As You can see from the image above fitness 101 has 1300 followers. We now need
to start to follow some of these.
Click on the “1300 Followers “ and you'll be asked to log into your account. Once
logged in you can then start to follow “Fitness 101's “followers .
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
There is no need to add all of them just spend 15 minutes a day doing this. Each day
choose a different person and add some of their followers. You will find that about
30% of people who you follow will follow you back.
It is important not to Follow too many people initially 200 or so is more than enough
or until your finger gets sore!! We don't want to have twitter think that we are
spammers.
Well done , You should have your first followers starting to appear in your account.
Now it's time to Generate some additional followers automatically.
Step 3
You will now start to pick up followers on your own just on the strength of your
tweets, before this happens you should set up an auto follow for anyone who follow
you. This means that if someone follows you , you will automatically follow them
back. You'll see why this is important later.
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
First got to http://Tweetlater.com
Tweet Later is a service that allows you to add automation to your twitter account.
What we are interested in today is the free service. One of the options in your account
is to auto follow people who follow you.
To do this go to your account and tick the auto follow box.
Now type a message in the box above which will be sent to each new follower. Do
NOT be tempted to place a link to something you are selling here. This is one big
mistake that a lot of people make they try to sell to someone in the first message.
Would you walk up to a person at a party say “Hi, I'm John Want to buy a new car
from me” No? Well don't do it with your first tweet.
Make the message friendly, unique and welcoming.
Now that you have set this up you will automatically follow anyone who follows
you...Time to follow some more people but this time we'll do it automatically.
Step 4
Now we'll get some people to follow added automatically to our account.
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
Head on over to Twollo http://twollo.com
Twollo allows you to automatically follow anyone tweeting about your niche.
In this case we could set up a few keywords : weight loss, diet, and maybe atkins or
south beach. Set the number of followers to 500 and Twollo will automatically
follow 500 people who tweet about those keywords over the next few weeks.
Once again you will be gaining followers from people who auto follow everyone who
follows them.
There is also a similar service available at Twollow.com
Now this leads us nicely to your account management.
Step 5
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
Managing Your Account
Once you start getting followers and following people then you need to manage your
account and follow a few basic rules.
Don't follow more than 1000 people in a day I would recommend only following
about 200 a day to start with.
Try to keep your number of followers and number you are following almost in
balance. i.e Following 1736 Followers 1795 (it doesn't matter if the number of
people you follow is much lower that those following you but it should never be
much higher.
This is especially important when you are approaching 2000 followers as that is when
twitter imposes a 10% limit , i.e. you can only follow 10% more people than you
have followers.
The simple way to balance you account is to remove people who aren't following
you.
There are 2 ways of doing this.
Go to your account and scan the list of followers if there isn't a facility to send a DM
then they aren't following you. So remove them unless they are inspirational or you
particularly want to follow them.
The other way is to use a service like http://friendorfollow.com/
This will automatically identify people who aren't following you back.
Ideally you should give people about 48 to 72 hours to follow you This is why it's
important to tweet regularly and make good tweets and don't try to sell with every
tweet you make.
People will check your profile and read your recent tweets before deciding to follow
you, if you give value then you'll get another follower.
Every day I spend a few minutes going through my account and removing people
who haven't followed me back that I've been following for 3 or 4 days. Once you get
into a routine it's quick and easy to do between tweets.
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
You can also use this free software to wee out non followers
http://www.novasoftserver.com/free-scripts/tweetie/
I also regularly scan my followers for people who haven't tweeted in a while. I use
this tool.. http://www.untweeps.com/
How to Keep Your Followers Engaged
The hardest thing with twitter is making interesting posts but there are several ways
of doing this. Follow blogs and rss feeds in your niche , if any interesting posts are
made inform people of them.
Use Google alerts to get all the latest news in your niche.
Retweet interesting messages, this is a great way to establish a bond with people in
your community.
Remember your ultimate aim is to sell and make profit but that doesn't mean you
need to alienate people keep “promotional” Tweets down to about 10% -20% of your
tweets.
A great way to engage your community is to produce free reports like this one. You
can provide information, generate followers by using a viral tweet form and
ultimately sell some of your products.
There are several Viral Tweet tools but I prefer the one that comes with Exit Splash
If you've got this book through the website you'll have seen how it works.
Finally.....Show Me The Money
If you've followed the steps above you'll have build a large group of loyal followers
use them wisely, Don't keep tweeting the same message It's OK to send a message out
over a few days and at different times but don't over do it.
Try to vary your tweets and intersperse them with interesting and useful information.
You can use budurl.com to track the traffic from your tweets it very useful to find out
what works and what doesn't.
Don't be in a rush to monetise your tweets, it's often said that it takes 7 emails until
Copyright 2009 Mark Thompson Check out my Blog For More great Ideas and Tips
someone trusts you enough to buy from you.. It takes considerably more tweets.
Giving away information and guides is an excellent way of making money. When you
got this guide I could very easily have added a simple one time offer for another
guide or a set twitter tools.
I could have also embedded several affiliate links within the guide so for example if
the guide was about getting fit I could have a review of several products along with
the affiliate links.
So you see you don't need to be blatant in your marketing and send out affiliate links
in every tweet.
That about wraps it up I hope you have enjoyed the ebook and it's given you a head
start in making money from twitter.
If you'd like to know more about how I created this guide and how you can create
guides like this to help you dominate your niche in twitter , then check out Wordpress
Goldmine where I've created a step by step video series about the creation and
marketing of this ebook and others.
You'll also find recent Video series on creating profitable blogs and article marketing
along with much much more.
